How to Create Your Iguanas Habitat
A well thought out living area or habitat for your iguanas is very important and will be very beneficial to their well being and development.
Supplying the right light, space, humidity, temperature and heating are important basic parts of any iguana habitat. However, in order for your iguana to thrive and develop well, certain extra accessories are necessary
These essential accessories include:
1. Substrates: These are materials that make up the surface of the habitat. Wood chips, gravel, sand or any other particulate materials should not be used for this purpose, as the iguana often flicks its tongue and some of these pieces may be picked up and eaten which is dangerous. It is recommended to use newspapers or regular papers with non toxic ink. Indoor or outdoor carpeting is also adequate.
2. Basking and climbing accessories: Iguanas are arboreal animals and therefore enjoy climbing up trees in wild open spaces. They also enjoy lazing and relaxing on the treetops. For this reason you must supply a form of climbing material in the enclosure. Simulating tree branches can be done by using shelves. Remember that the branches should be large enough for the iguana to lie comfortably on and in order to assist it in climbing you can cover the branches with a form of rugged material, like carpeting.
3. Food and water dishes: Make sure that you supply clean dishes for food and water on a daily basis. Iguanas tend to drink sparingly but they enjoy soaking in water so you should also provide a bigger water dish for this purpose. Also allow the dish to be big enough to prevent it from tipping over when the iguana enters, and shallow enough to prevent drowning. After swimming, iguanas may use the pool as a bathroom and so you must change the water and sanitize it on a regular basis.
4. Proper Lighting and Heating: This is one of the most important aspects of any iguana habitat. You should look for lights that produce adequate amounts of UVA light which will help to aid your iguana in performing its daily functions. Also it is important to maintain a high temperature and humidity throughout the habitat to replicate a natural wild habitat. Finally make sure there is proper ventilation throughout the habitat by using properly placed air holes throughout it.
5. Hiding places: Just like humans, iguanas need private time for themselves where they can be undisturbed and unobserved. It is essential, therefore, that you provide a hiding place for your pet. A log or rock could be used so that the iguana can just go and hide behind it.
Adding these extra accessories to the living area of your iguana will ensure an ideal environment for him to flourish in. Not only are these accessories recommended but also necessary to maintain the health of your iguana.
