Iguanas can be high maintenance pets even though they appear very small and innocent. Their appearances can be deceptive and they do require as much proper care and treatment as any other pet. Like with other pets, it is important to always wash and clean up after them.  Also they need to be tamed by you so that there are no discipline or management problems after they grow up.  It is best to start taming your iguana from early on as it may be too difficult to get it under control when it is big and restless.

Cleaning and taming should be done every day so that the iguana becomes accustomed easily.  Because iguanas can be quite aggressive about their territories, you need to handle them gently and patiently so that they feel completely comfortable in your presence. Iguanas are made for the wild and therefore any movements of your hand from above them will be viewed as a possible predator. So make sure you move your hand toward them very slowly at eye level, with no sudden or quick movements. For assistance in this process it is recommended that you see pictures or videos of how to handle them properly. Another tip is to approach them while whispering or speaking softly.

The best way to tame your iguana gradually is to spend lots of time every day handling and caring for him. There are certain body movements that are made by iguanas such whipping their tales or bobbing their heads, and these meanings need to be understood properly in order for maximum interaction to take place. Usually when an iguana bobs its head or whips its tail it means that it wants to be left alone.

With regards to feeding, there are many arguments surrounding this topic but it is important to know that they are herbivores and are therefore strictly vegetarian. They enjoy flowers, fruit, and leaves. However, some books suggest feeding them animal protein based foods because they require a varied diet. Feeding the wrong foods can lead to illness and even death and so should all food should be properly screened before being eaten by your iguana.

Even though iguanas can tear and rip their food apart with their saw like teeth, it is still better if you clean and chop the food well before feeding. Iguanas require at least two green leafy vegetables a day as well as other fresh food that contain phosphorous and calcium, to maintain their healthy bones. Clean fresh water is also essential in your iguana’s diet. The size of your iguana should generally determine exactly how much food it requires. The best thing is to give him enough food to last the whole day and then to leave some food with him at night.
